Dan Mayer was born and raised in Dillon, Montana and started leatherworking at age 11. Age at 18, Dan had gathered his tools, supplies and books on saddle making, and started learning his craft from Montana saddle maker George Holt. He also attended tree-making school with John Michaud in Billings, and later reached out to Dale Harwood to further perfect his tree-making ability. Dale gave of his time and energy in instructing Dan's early efforts, and Dan would often take his finished trees to Harwood's shop for approval and suggestions. This close work with Harwood helped grow Dan's skills, knowledge and ability, and today Dan is considered one of the foremost tree-makers. Each of Dan's saddles is a special creation. He truly understands the needs of a working horseman, as he is a rancher and outfitter himself in Montana. As a testament to the quality of his work, his saddles are being used by such notable horsemen as Bryan Neubert and Randy Rieman. Dan strives to make each new saddle better than his last, and works with each client personally to create a saddle that fits both horse and rider. |
